Finance Aspirants are always perplexed with these terms & the type of work involved in the job roles
Broadly summarising, ๐ฆ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ๐ ๐จ๐๐๐ข๐๐ (๐๐) guys do a basic level of screening, research work, they act as a filter.

๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ญ ๐จ๐๐๐ข๐๐ (๐
๐) guys take those inputs, analyse them, & then decide to go ahead with the deal or not.

The job of the MO would be:
Get data regarding the population of India, Internet Penetration levels, analyse trends around it, build a basic list of competitors or active players in the market & share it with the front office team.
The FO takes those inputs and then TAKE A DECISION. They call the shots.
In FO, ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐ ๐๐ญ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฑ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐, you understand the business & economic view of doing the transaction/investment. You have a ๐ก๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐ . They work on a deal for 3 to 6 months.
In MO, you donโt work on deals, you work on deliverables. They get work in bits & pieces. They might just do model updates or just competitor analysis or just rudimentary analysis overview. They are associated with ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ ๐๐๐ฐ ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐๐ฅ and might work for 5 to 7 days on an XYZ deal.
Understand, the cornerstone of backend or KPO jobs is ๐๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฌ๐๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐ for UK/Europe.
As an Indian, I donโt even know who is the finance minister of the UK or what level S&P 500 is trading, despite that the asset manager is giving me some work? ๐๐ก๐ฒ? Because it doesnโt require niche skills. They are not seeing us as experts.
>>Please note, Both the jobs are EQUALLY important. ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ a team of Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar canโt win if they donโt have good quality defenders<<
How to understand whether it is a front end role? Simple...
๐๐ฌ๐ค ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐๐ฐ ๐ฉ๐๐ง๐๐ฅ which type of clients or counterparties we work for? What is their geography?
If sitting in India you are doing working for 401k valuations or US GAAP or helping M&A happening in London or screening US-listed stocks then it's 99% a back-end role.
๐๐จ๐งโ๐ญ get seduced by fancy words like Investment Banking Analyst or Valuations Analyst etc.
MO in India, strategy is to earn in $ and spend in โน
A big4 India team got โน15,000 as WFH allowance and at the same time backend team (India office of US) got $1000 (which is โน75K)
It's easier to get into MO roles, relatively work-life balance is better and the FIXED COMPONENT of the pay is also at par at junior levels.
The typical path would be to break into a MO role, learn & get exposure for 2-4 years & then try to switch and move to FO role
Even a long-term career in backend roles is very rewarding. It's just the choice one has to make depending on his tastes & preferences.
